    G9 Pendulum B/C Summative 2

    Dear students,

Please find the template on the previous post. Here goes some directives for your work today.

    • Make sure to measure the length of the pendulum from the pivot point to the center of the bob, only measure the length after the pendulum is assembled
    • You will need at least 5 different lengths of pendulum and for each one carry out 3 trials. Make sure at least 3 of those lengths are 12cm or shorter.
    • To find the period of 1 oscillation, time 5 full oscillations of the pendulum with a stopwatch, then divide the time by 5. This is done so that the error associated to starting the stopwatch and the pendulum at the same time is reduced.
    • Graph the period(y-axis) vs the length (x-axis), it should look like f(x) = sqrt x.
    • Remember to record the lengths in meters and the time in seconds.
    • Graph the period squared(y-axis) vs the length (x-axis). It should be a line of slope close to 4.
    • If you are done ccollecting data, then proceed to writing the lab, start with Criterion B
    • In the background information, make sure to write about the equation of the period of a pendulum (research), how each variable affects the period (mass, length, angle, gravity). Can you figure out why the slope of the last graph should be 4? As for some historical background, you can talk about Christiaan Huygens, the dutch Newton. Uses of pendulums in real life include wrecking balls, rides in amusement parks (viking ship et al), religious practices, clocks, music, and more.
